COP26 ‘Closing the Loop:
The Circular Construction Game’

Re-Fabricate were invited to join the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) at their COP26 residency in November 2021. Our work was exhibited as part of the Architectures of Crisis: Hopes and Visions at the New Glasgow Society and we also traveled up over the weekend of the 5th November to run a workshop at their second site at Many Studios.

For the workshop we developed a new prototype board game building on the Circular Card Game we had produced previously. ‘Closing the Loop: The Circular Construction Game’ asks players to follow the lifespan of a building from erection to end of life making key design decisions as they go. Each player is given a building type at the start and as they make their way around the board, they are faced with multiple choice scenarios which they must respond to with their building typology in mind. For each chosen response they will receive carbon or best practice cards and once complete, the cards will be counted. The game, aimed at 10-16 year olds, demonstrates to players the concept of circular construction and the challenge of achieving it with the current culture of the construction industry.
