The People’s Pavilion 2021

Re-Fabricate were invited to collaborate with Beyond the Box Consultants on the People’s Pavilion in 2021 as circular economy design and engagement consultants.

The People’s Pavilion ran from March to August 2021 and provided young east-Londoners with an opportunity to design and construct a pavilion at Here East in Stratford. The project began as a design competition with groups of young people working together over a series of digital weekend workshops to develop their proposals whilst learning about the built environment and upskilling in model making, design and presentation skills. The chosen team was selected by public vote during the London Festival of Architecture in June and the design of the pavilion was developed for construction in August 2020. The pavilion was in place for two weeks to host the Envision East Festival which was developed in parallel to the design project by a group of young curators who had applied to be involved earlier in the year.

Following its success, Here East have chosen to keep the pavilion as a permanent feature that can be seen in their central courtyard. The People’s Pavilion won the 2021 youth programme Thornton Education Trust’s Inspire Future Generations award.

As circular economy consultants, Re-Fabricate hosted 2 digital workshops on circular economy followed by an in-person workshop that focused on construction materials and supply chains. The wider aim being to educate all young people involved on the importance of sustainability and considering the carbon impact and lifecycle of materials used in construction.

During the technical design and construction process, Re-Fabricate worked with Scale Rule and Beyond the Box in developing the detailed design which included reusing military parachutes as the pavilion’s canopy. Our team also helped build the pavilion.
